There’s something deeply grounding about working with macramé—the rhythm of the knots, the slow build, and the way a design reveals itself row by row. This weaving was a project rooted in learning, experimenting, and trusting the process.
For this piece, I drew inspiration from a macramé book I’ve been working through, along with a handful of YouTube tutorials that helped me better understand structure, pattern flow, and shaping. I love blending different learning sources—it gives me the freedom to follow a pattern while still making the piece my own.
One of my favorite parts of this project was creating the color palette. The blue and gray cords were hand-dyed by me, which added an extra layer of meaning to the finished weaving. Hand dyeing is always a bit of a surprise—no two batches are ever exactly the same—and I love how the subtle variations give the piece depth and character. The cool blues paired with soft gray and natural cotton felt calm, balanced, and a little coastal, which fit perfectly with the layered, rainbow-style design and our house.
The weaving itself features repeating arcs and textured knotting, finished with long, flowing fringe that adds movement and softness. Hanging from a simple wooden dowel, the piece feels both structured and free—something I am trying to accomplish in my fiber work.
This macramé weaving is a reminder of why I love fiber arts so much. It’s not just about the finished piece, but about the learning, the experimenting, and the quiet moments spent creating with my hands. Every knot tells part of the story.
If you’re interested in macramé or fiber art, I can’t recommend mixing books and video tutorials enough—it’s a wonderful way to grow your skills while still leaving room for creativity and personal style.
