The Phone Swap by Lia Lewis is an upcoming contemporary romance set to release in August 2026, and I had the chance to read it early thanks to an ARC from NetGalley and Atria/Emily Bestler Books.
The novel is structured in three distinct parts, and while my reading experience shifted as the story progressed, there were several elements that really stood out to me.
The opening section was easily my favorite. I enjoyed the initial concept and the way the story unfolded through modern communication, even though the formatting — particularly the text messages and back-and-forth exchanges — could occasionally feel a little confusing. Still, the early interactions between the main characters were charming, and I found myself genuinely invested in the connection forming between them.
As the story moved forward, my enjoyment became more mixed. While I appreciated the emotional depth the author was aiming for, some character choices left me feeling conflicted. That said, the book shines when it comes to its setting and themes. I especially loved learning more about the scientific research elements, the Arctic backdrop, and the idea of using social media as a tool for conservation and animal advocacy. These aspects added a refreshing layer to the story and helped it stand out.
The supporting cast was another strong point. Several side characters felt well-developed and emotionally grounded, offering warmth, humor, and much-needed support throughout the story. In many ways, they became some of my favorite parts of the book.
While a certain amount of miscommunication in relationships is realistic, this novel leans heavily into it, which made portions of the story harder for me to fully connect with. The emotional push and pull sometimes overshadowed the quieter, more meaningful moments I had hoped to see explored further.
Overall, The Phone Swap has thoughtful themes, solid world-building, and memorable supporting characters. While it wasn’t a perfect fit for me personally, I can see readers who enjoy emotionally driven romances with complex relationships finding a lot to engage with here.
If you’re curious about a contemporary romance that blends modern communication, personal growth, and meaningful environmental themes, this is one to keep an eye on when it releases in August 2026.
