Purple neon book cover for Night Terror by Vincent Ralph, showing a mall fountain, eerie plants, and a reaching hand at the bottom.

If you're a fan of old-school Fear Street, Christopher Pike, or anything with a strong 80s horror vibe, then Vincent Ralph's Bleak Haven series is definitely one to check out. Night Terror, the second book in the series, brings readers back to the cursed town of Bleak Haven for another creepy YA thriller—and I had a lot of fun with it.

As a 41-year-old reader, I think the 80s nostalgia was one of my favorite things about this book. Night Terror takes us back to a time before smartphones, social media, and Google could solve every mystery. We're talking Blockbuster, walkie-talkies, and serial killers who have to figure things out the old-

fashioned way. There's something about that lack of technology that makes a horror story feel a little more unsettling. When characters can't just pull out a phone and call for help or look up answers online, you really feel the isolation.

And honestly, I loved it.

While Night Terror is definitely a YA thriller, I think the nostalgic atmosphere makes it especially appealing to adult readers who grew up with 80s and 90s horror. There were moments that gave me that same feeling I remember getting from picking up a Fear Street or Christopher Pike book and settling in for a creepy story.

I also really enjoyed the characters in this installment. One thing that stood out to me was how different their backgrounds were. Some come from loving families, others from abusive homes, and some simply struggle with feeling like they don't fit in. I thought those differences made the characters feel more interesting and gave the story more than just a straightforward horror plot.

But what I found especially interesting in Night Terror was the opportunity to learn more about Bleak Haven itself.

The town has been cursed for a very long time, and this book digs deeper into that history. I enjoyed learning more about the origins of the curse and exploring the question of why Bleak Haven has been plagued for so long. The mythology surrounding the town was one of my favorite aspects of the story, and I liked seeing the world of the series expand.

I gave Night Terror 4 stars. I'm not sure I can say that I enjoyed it more than the first book, but I genuinely enjoyed both installments, and I'm definitely invested in seeing where this series goes next.

If you enjoy YA horror and thrillers, especially with a nostalgic 80s twist, I think Night Terror is worth adding to your reading list. It's creepy, entertaining, and a fun throwback to the kind of horror stories that many of us grew up reading.

And now I just need to know what happens next in Bleak Haven...

My Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
