Book Review: Witch of the Wolves by Kaylee Archer

I read plenty of paranormal books, but historical fiction and historical romance aren't usually genres I gravitate toward. That was part of what made Witch of the Wolves interesting to me, though. The combination of historical romance and paranormal elements was intriguing, and I really liked the premise behind the story.
The biggest issue I had with this one was the pacing. This book moves fast. I didn't mind the quick pace for the most part, and it definitely made it an easy read, but there were several times when I wished things would slow down just a little. Since this is the beginning of a series, I know there is a lot of setup that has to happen, but I felt like we were constantly rushing from one thing to the next.
I think that also affected the character development for me.
There were some really interesting characters in this book, and I wanted more time with them. Cordelia was probably the character I struggled with the most—not because I disliked her, but because I couldn't ever quite decide how I felt about her. She has some really strong qualities that I liked, but I never felt like I completely connected with her.
Bishop was an interesting lead as well. I liked him, but I spent so much of the book questioning his motives and wondering if I could actually trust him. I was constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop, which I'm guessing may have been exactly the feeling the author wanted.
I also think some of the supporting characters have a lot of potential, and I'm hoping we get to see more of them as the series continues.
Overall, I enjoyed Witch of the Wolves. The historical and paranormal combination worked better for me than I expected, and I really liked the premise and where the story could go. I just wanted a little more depth—especially with the characters—and a little less rushing.
Since this ARC came as part of a two-book deal, I'm looking forward to picking up the next book and seeing where Kaylee Archer takes the story and these characters. I definitely have questions I want answered, and I'm curious to see if some of the characters get more room to develop as the series continues.
For me, this is a solid 3.5-star read, which I'm rounding up to 4.
